Astronomers Deal With Outrageous Phenomena

first_imgEven for scientists accustomed to big things, some observations seem too outrageous to explain.Outrageous LuminosityAstronomers report most ‘outrageously’ luminous galaxies ever observed (Science Daily). Just how outrageous are the new observations of superluminous galaxies?Astronomers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst report that they have observed the most luminous galaxies ever seen in the Universe, objects so bright that established descriptors such as “ultra-” and “hyper-luminous” used to describe previously brightest known galaxies don’t even come close. Lead author and undergraduate Kevin Harrington says, “We’ve taken to calling them ‘outrageously luminous’ among ourselves, because there is no scientific term to apply.”Previous luminous galaxies were dubbed “ultra-luminous” if they were estimated to have a trillion times the luminosity of the sun. What do you call something that has 100 trillion? That’s what they found from a mountaintop observatory in Mexico and verified with two orbiting telescopes.Yun adds, “The galaxies we found were not predicted by theory to exist; they’re too big and too bright, so no one really looked for them before.” Discovering them will help astronomers understand more about the early Universe. “Knowing that they really do exist and how much they have grown in the first 4 billion years since the Big Bang helps us estimate how much material was there for them to work with. Their existence teaches us about the process of collecting matter and of galaxy formation. They suggest that this process is more complex than many people thought.“Some of the brightness may be an artifact of gravitational lensing, the article goes on to say. But something outrageous is happening at the objects themselves. “We still don’t know how many tens to hundreds of solar masses of gas can be converted into stars so efficiently in these objects, and studying these objects might help us to find out.”Heavy Thoughts About Heavy ElementsCurrent theory about supernova explosions can only account for the creation of some elements in the periodic table. “But there’s a hole in our understanding,” states an article about this on PhysOrg. Heavier elements (gold, platinum, uranium and others) require a theoretical process called the rapid neutron-capture process (r-process). According to this model, heavy elements get built up rapidly from lighter seed nuclei. It takes an exotic set of circumstances to get the r-process working, because it requires the infusion of large numbers of neutrons. The article describes how neutron stars first have to form with the seed nuclei. Then, if two neutron stars merge, the resulting supernova should be able to reach the required energy levels. How often does this scenario take place?During the formation of a neutron star, a large amount of neutrons is released. If two of these neutron stars happen to be orbiting each other, they will eventually merge to form one giant neutron star. During that explosion neutrons are released and r-process elements can form.A dwarf galaxy named Reticulum II appears to have an abundance of heavy elements. The astronomers interviewed in the article assume that those elements were formed from such scenarios. This would have happened 12 billion years ago, not long after the big bang, they assume. What this means is that a single rare event produced a rather large amount of this r-process material. All those elements were then incorporated into the surrounding gas and from there into the next generations of stars. It is those stars that we can still observe today.Since the merger of two neutron stars implies previous generations of stars, the astronomer did not predict finding these heavy elements so far back in time. In fact, when Alex Ji detected them, he thought he had messed up the observations. “During the hour-long discussions that followed, I kept observing more stars while carrying out preliminary analyses of the data at hand to ensure that this was a real signal,” he remarked. How Did Heavy Elements Get to Earth’s Surface? Why do we see flakes of palladium, platinum and other heavy elements on the surface of the Earth? It’s been presumed that geological processes dredge them up from the interior (assuming these first originated from the rare neutron-star mergers). Imagine the surprise when scientists found that bacteria have a lot to do with it. PhysOrg quotes Frank Reith from the University of Adelaide:“Traditionally it was thought that these platinum group metals only formed under high pressure and temperature systems deep underground, and that when they were brought to the surface through weathering and uplift, they just sat there and nothing further happened to them,” says Dr Reith.“We’ve shown that that is far from the case. We’ve linked specialised bacterial communities, found in biofilms on the grains of platinum group minerals at three separate locations around the world, with the dispersion and re-concentration of these elements in surface environments. In short, “nuggets of platinum and related metals can be reformed at the surface through bacterial processes,” the scientists found. Reith adds,“We’ve shown the biofilms occur across a range of platinum-group-metal grains and in different locations,” says Dr Reith. “And we’ve shown, that at the Brazil site at least, the entire process of formation of platinum and palladium was mediated by microbes.“There is so much that scientists still do not understand, it behooves them to learn humility. The three more infamous words in science reports are: “now we know.” (Visited 40 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Pearltrees: A Design Interface for Remapping the Web

first_img Rather than looking at the web as a series of linear pages, this service lets us build tree graphs of connecting arguments, share them and then break them at any time. Using a browser bookmarking tool, we can add and connect related pearls or ideas, place them within other pearls or start a new pearl tree (or train of thought). Rather than displaying a list of items, your pearls connect to your profile. You are literally the center of the universe and your thoughts follow you wherever you go. Naturally, as a newly anointed God of information, other great thinkers will gravitate towards you. Shared pearls connect you to others and allow you to view their collections. From here you can choose your favorite content and omit the noise. From here you can email your pearls, embed them in your blog or broadcast them to Twitter and Facebook. The Future of Touch InterfacesGiven the unique user interface of Pearltrees, Lamothe expects that the company will roll out feature releases and enhancements on an ongoing basis. Says the CEO, “Once we’ve launched the web interface, the potential of a touch product will be very exciting.” At this point, I almost fell out of my chair thinking about the possibilities. Using Pearltrees in conjunction with a touch interface would be extremely practical. Rather than swiping down long lists of links to find articles, images or videos, users could tap on their desired pearl and follow the connectors to the information they wanted. Not only would this greatly improve the research experience, but it could also change device design. For some reason, many touch interfaces mimic the experience of the first personal computers. We are offered a series of boxes from which to start our applications with little room for reorganization or prioritization. The Pearltrees model may prove to be the most efficient way to navigate period. Pearltrees is such a product. The French site offers us a new way to explore and contextualize the web. In what looks like a mind map structure, users collect “pearls” (links to articles, videos and web pages) and drag and drop them to form a body of knowledge that folds and expands upon itself. In an interview with Pearltrees CEO Patrice Lamothe, ReadWriteWeb found that company already has a loyal user base including our friends at ReadWriteFrance.Said Lamothe, “We wanted a type of game play that was playful to use and map the web…and the fact that you can group and ungroup content easily means that you can re-catalogue it and keep it current.” Related Posts Tags:#start#startups A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more

Why Facebook Ditched the Mobile Web & Went Native With its New iOS App

first_imgFacebook released a completely rebuilt version of its iOS app for iPhone and iPad today, changing a fundamental aspect of the company’s mobile strategy. Gone is the Web-centric, HTML5 approach. In its place, Facebook has rebuilt the iOS app using Apple’s native framework. The result? A more streamlined, faster app for the iPhone and iPad.Ditching the Mobile WebFor earlier app versions, Facebook “wrapped” its mobile website (m.facebook.com) in code that allowed it to run on iOS and Android hardware. Items from Facebook’s newsfeed, friend’s lists and other features would be imported from the website and rendered using HTML5. Facebook would add iOS- or Android-native code that allowed the app to perform functions the mobile website could not, like accessing a smartphone’s camera. Then it would deploy this bundle on the various mobile platforms. Click here for more on how Facebook’s mobile apps were designed for “write once, run everywhere.”The advantages of this approach were several. Facebook could send updates to the app multiple times a day, so it could be very agile in addressing and fixing problems. Facebook could also support many different types of devices and platforms with one code base. The company supported more than 7,000 devices with this approach, reaching 500 million mobile users.Facebook engineering manager Dave Fetterman described the approach at f8, Facebook’s developer conference, last year:“Being able to write it once today and ship it tomorrow? That is something that Facebook is really good at and that we love doing, and that is at the center of being able to move fast. Move fast has an implicit third clause – move fast, break things, and fix things fast. That is very difficult to do if you have already shipped your binary to Apple or Android and they have to download another version of it.”Facebook’s apps on some platforms, including Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Android (as well as the traditional mobile website), are still be built this way. According to The Verge, they may be getting the native treatment in the future. But the company decided to handle iOS differently.“[W]e realized that when it comes to platforms like iOS, people expect a fast, reliable experience and our iOS app was falling short. Now that our mobile services had breadth, we wanted depth. So, we rewrote Facebook for iOS from the ground up (I really did open up Xcode and click “New Project”) with a focus on quality and leveraging the advances that have been made in iOS development,” wrote Facebook developer J.P. Dann in a blog post explaining the changes. Embracing Native, Building for SpeedFacebook achieved three main benefits by embracing native code for its iOS app. Foremost, the app now opens faster, without the lag that many users complained about. Second, scrolling is smoother. Third, photos are uploaded instantly. Facebook is now using Objective-C for its iOS app, which executes much faster than HTML5. It built the app in Apple’s iOS development framework called XCode. The transition created some challenges for the Facebook team, such as pre-caching content on the newsfeed so it would load immediately upon opening the app. A natural consequence of moving from HTML5 to Objective-C is better scrolling. Any developer who works extensively in HTML5 knows that smooth scrolling is not easily achieved. Essentially, Facebook did nothing special here to increase the scrolling outside of moving from one code base to another. Facebook has released two other native applications to iOS: Messenger and Camera. The Messenger feature within the main Facebook app is the same code in the standalone Messenger app. In many ways, Dann explains, the Messenger app was the testing ground for the new Facebook app, helping the Facebook mobile team learn how to develop with native code and how users would respond to the app. Why Rebuild for Native?Facebook has been a firm believer in HTML5 and Web-based technology. The pillar of Facebook’s platform has always been the browser. Why change now?The obvious reason is, as Dann explained, speed and efficiency. Facebook’s iOS app is certainly better now. It is hard to begrudge a company for making a product better, even if it goes against the historic principles of that company.Another reason, a conspiracy theory perhaps, is that Apple forced Facebook to rebuild its mobile app for iOS if it was going to get the deeply embedded treatment in the upcoming release of iOS 6 that Twitter got in iOS 5. One of the biggest threats of Apple’s dominance in mobile is the potential for an open Web-based market independent of Apple’s App Store. Facebook has been one of the biggest proponents of HTML5 and many developers follow the company’s lead in this area. By forcing Facebook to go native, Apple wins a philosophical victory in the war for the hearts and minds of mobile developers.  Tags:#Apple#apps#Facebook#mobile Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement dan rowinski Related Posts center_img Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technologylast_img read more

Saif goes blonde for ‘Go Goa Gone’

first_imgSaif Ali Khan made heads turn with his new look as he stepped out of Mumbais Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport sporting blonde hair and a set of brand new tattoos splashed liberally on his left arm and fingers.Girlfriend Kareena Kapoor was at the airport to receive him as Saif returned from Mauritius after finishing a shooting schedule for his upcoming zombie comedy, Go Goa Gone , which he has also produced.”These are Aztec symbols that symbolise peace and harmony. I have got the tattoos because they ward off the evil eye,” Saif said. The blonde hair, the actor said, was part of his look in Go Goa Gone . He plays a member of the Russian mafia who is hunting for a zombie. The hair, he said, “adds to the character”. “I have tried to experiment with my look in the film as it is an altogether different character from all that I have ever played,” he said. This is not the first time that he has got himself inked. Earlier, he had etched Kareena on his left forearm.Saif seemed to be enjoying showing off his new tattoos to the press, even as the lensmen missed no chance to click away.In 2008, Saif created a buzz when he got Kareenas name tattooed on his forearm. The tattoo has been tactfully concealed in his films but the latest set of tattoos that he has acquired will obviously be visible in his upcoming projects.Apart from Go Goa Gone, Saif is also shooting for Abbas- Mustans Race 2 . He will have to get rid of his blonde look for Race 2 , of course.advertisement”The look in Race 2 is an extension of what it was in the first film. In the sequel, though, I will look more muscular and sport more tattoos on my arms,?? Saif, who had acquired a lean look for his latest releases, Agent Vinod and Cocktail , said. For Race 2, he added, he has hired a new trainer to get into the beefy mode.
