I was out of town when Dusty’s tenure in Cincinnati came to an end. After their loss to Pittsburgh, I am sure his dismissal came as no surprise to most baseball fans. You can’t fire the multi-millionaires who do not perform up to their potential, so the scapegoat is always the manager first. I have talked to several people, and most feel Dusty’s heart was not in the game this year. I think his near miss with his heart attack in Chicago while managing the Reds a while back left Dusty scared. It seemed at times that his focus in the dugout, especially early in the season, was not always there. All coaches will tell you that the players under you can sense when the coach may not be 100% into his job. This may not have been the case, but it might explain some of the lackluster play of the Reds this year. The loss of Ryan Ludwig for most of the season was a big factor in the Reds anemic offense at times. When Ryan came back, he was not the same player and he really hurt the Reds lineup by playing. Dusty is so true to his players that to him left field was Ryan’s place, and he was going to give it to him despite his shortcomings this season. When he chose Cueto to start the most important game of the year, Dusty put himself in a win or else situation. When you have four other starters with 10+ wins on your team, most people said “why Cueto?” Not one of these incidents got him fired by itself, but when a “super team” loses early, heads will fall. As I said earlier, it is always the manager first. Dusty deserved better, but this a money game and not a sentiment game.
